The 2010 stonybrook Basketball Clinic was a phenomenal success Campers improved their skills which includd dribbling, passing, playing defense and shooting.

All campers felt like NBA stars as they worked diligently each day. The campers ended each session with fun and competitive shooting games and NBA trivia. To further celebrate the basketball clinic, the campers were treated to a counselor NBA Slam Dunk Contest. Fun and smiles were had by all. We look forward to the campers returning in 2011.

TEEN XTREME GOES TO MARYLAND!!!

As the Teen Xtreme bus pulled back into Stonybrook, we recalled all the good times on our Maryland trip. We began our trip rubbing “Testudo’s nose” (their mascot) for good luck, at the University of Maryland. It must have worked because we had a good week and a ton of fun. At night, we heard ghostly tales while touring Fells Point.

On our second day, we woke up to a beautiful, sunny day outside. While at the Naval Academy, the campers watched the “plebes” (first years) doing basic training exercises. We also saw the Heisman trophy awards, the dormitories and paid respects at the tomb of John Paul Jones. Later n the day, we had a great tour of Camden Yards and even got to sit in the dugout, private boxes and the press box. The trip came to a wonderful end by watching street performers and viewed the sights of the Inner Harbor.

We are all looking forward to Washington D.C. and Burlington Vermont in the next few weeks.

YAD SDRAWKCAB

Don’t be surprised if your camper asks you for breakfast instead of dinner when they arrive home tonight! Why, because it is YAD SDRAWKCAB aka BACKWARDS DAY!!!!! In typical van challenge spirit, our campers and staff came off the vans today wearing various articles of clothing backwards. We heard some tags were cut in the process, but it was for a good cause.

And to continue the theme, we started off our day, lowering the flag and enjoying ice cream, just the way we typically end each day at Stonybrook. Some have requested we keep ice cream as a morning activity but not to worry, many of us working at camp are parents, and tomorrow it is back to our regular schedule.

Some groups took the theme seriously walking backwards, trying to sing songs backwards and even spelling words and names backwards, all in good fun! But many things were consistent about the day. Those who had enrolled in the Basketball Clinic worked on skills and drills, followed by a scrimmage. Clinic participants joined their groups at the end of third period. Many campers enjoyed arts and crafts, Super Science and Eco Adventure. Over at Arts & Crafts, they are building, gluing, painting and creating fabulous projects to bring home to their parents. Some groups visited our Cooking Specialists where they enjoyed dipping fruit in chocolate or making Monkey Bread. Other campers participated in sports including t-ball and soccer.

And yes, at the end of the day, we raised the flag before boarding the vans! You will be surprised at how such a simple thing like running our day backwards can bring smiles and laughs all around.

Go Team Annabelle!

We are so proud of our campers for their summer accomplishments (trying new things, advancing in swim, making new friends, developing leadership skills, creating a fabulous art project, getting over a fear…. the list is endless) but it is also nice to highlight camper accomplishments for things outside of camp and share them with our Stonybrook Camp community.

Annabelle and Adam Christ, twins from Randolph, are joining us for their sixth summer at Stonybrook and bring to camp a love for Giants football and lots of camp spirit. At camp, Belle loves cooking, swimming and arts n’ crafts while Adam loves super science, jumping pillow and boating/fishing.

Belle and Adam, along with their entire family and many friends, are part of Team Annabelle and we applaud them for their amazing fundraising efforts for Cystic Fibrosis through the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Great Strides Walk. Belle leads the team, which brings together many supporters, including other Stonybrook friends.

We interviewed Belle to find out more about Team Annabelle and all she has done for Cystic Fibrosis awareness.

What is Cystic Fibrosis (CF)?
Belle: CF if a disease that I was born with. It makes all of the liquids in my body very sticky, so I can get lung infections and can have trouble digesting my food. I take a lot of medicine and do a lot of therapy everyday to keep my body healthy.

What did you do to raise money and awareness about CF this year?
Belle: We did the walk for cystic fibrosis at Horseshoe Lake. It was our 7th year walking as Team Annabelle. Our team has over 75 people in it and we raised over $25,000 this year. In total, we have raised well over $100,000 for the cause over the last 7 years. In addition, to raise awareness for CF my mom and I shot a video clip with Shaun O'Hara from the NY Giants to promote awareness through his Foundation HIKE. I spoke about living with CF and why it is important to support CF research and fundraising.

Does CF slow you down?
Belle: No way!

Are you proud of yourself and your family for raising money and awareness about CF?
Belle: Yes I am.

What has this accomplishment- fundraising and helping with CF awareness- taught you about yourself?
Belle: That I can do anything I believe in

What do you want to be when you grow up.... camp director?
Belle: Actually, yes I would love to be a camp director, I love camp!

Besides your favorite camp activities, cooking, swimming and arts n’ crafts, what are your other interests?
Belle: I love the NY Giants.

According the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, CF is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States (70,000 worldwide). A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that: clogs the lungs and leads to dangerous lung infections; and obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food. For more information on CF, you can go to the foundation website at www.cff.org.

Once again, we applaud Belle and her entire family for being so ambitious and successful both in their fundraising and in their helping to raise awareness about CF. In the last six years we have gotten to see Belle in action at camp and we can definitely agree that CF has not slowed her down! She demonstrates a great deal of bravery, takes things in stride and always has a smile on her face. Go Team Annabelle!

FUN-FUN-FUN DAY!!!

Did you have fun today? If you were at Stonybrook, then you definitely did!! Today, campers, young and old enjoyed Stonybrook as one big family. The weather cooperated for most of the day as we all enjoyed many of the wonderful activities that our young campers enjoy everyday.

The Challenge Course was open for business. Our campers participated, but also enjoyed watching their mom, dad and even grandparents climb!!
The pond was busy, with campers ‘of all ages’ rowing, peddling and relaxing in the many types of boats we have on the water.

At Eco Adventure everyone had a chance to meet our newest additions- Stony and Brook, our pet rabbits as they fished for crayfish using nets.

Up at art, both children and parents were making sand art projects as they enjoyed the entertainment of a D.J. And of course we ended the day with ice cream served by Shelly, just as our campers do every day.

SPIRIT SOARS AT STONYBROOK!!!

Spirit Week culminated today with all our campers in their Spirit shirts singing their hearts out. Each group had an opportunity to sing their group Spirit Song in front of all of camp. Campers and counselors were riveted as each group performed.

All week long, groups could be heard all over camp, cheering and chanting as they moved from one activity to the next. Our campers always enjoy Spirit Week. They design and decorate their group shirts and look forward to competing at the end of the week.

This year, all the groups were fantastic. In the end, two groups were chosen as the over all winners, with two other groups as runners up. The M & M’s were declared the winners in Junior Camp. The Lucky Charms won in Upper Camp. The Rock Stars and the Mad Dogs were close runners up. All our campers poured their hearts out and performed beautifully. Four groups, the two winning groups and the two runners up, enjoyed an ice cream party at Dairy Queen. Honorable mention goes to Glitter Ninjas for a phenomenal performance today.

SAFETY, SAFETY, SAFETY…

Have you met Janis? Janis is our Camp Nurse and has been for twelve years. Janis has been a nurse for more years than she will admit. She has worked at St. Barnabas and Overlook hospitals in the cardiac unit. During the school year, she currently works in the public schools in Livingston and West Orange. Her breadth and depth of knowledge is an incredible asset to Stonybrook Day Camp.

Janis makes sure that all necessary medical policies are enforced to insure the safety and well being of your child. Janis administers daily medication if your child requires it. She makes sure all our campers are well taken care of. Whether a camper comes in for a band-aid or a hug, Janis is always ready, willing and able to cater to their specific needs.

Jen joins Janis in the Health Center. Jen comes to us with thirteen years of experience as a nurse. She has worked at St. Barnabas and currently works at Morristown Memorial Hospital in the surgical recovery unit. Jen, like Janis, treats your children as her own.

Both women have children that have spent many summers at Stonybrook. All three of Janis’s boys enjoyed many summers at camp. Jen’s two girls are currently here at camp. Both Jen and Janis are an integral part of the Stonybrook Team.

TIME CAPSULE FOUND!!!

Thirty-one summers ago, campers and counselors put a time capsule together, gathered around and buried it in the ground at Stonybrook Day Camp. Over the years, the search for its location has gone on. And now, finally, the search is over…

On July 20th,2010 at approximately 2 o’clock in the afternoon, a long time camper, Zach Solano found the time capsule. The excitement at this news rivaled the beginning of Color War!! Zach was using a metal detector during his group’s period at Eco Adventure. He was moving the equipment over the ground by upper flagpole when suddenly ‘the metal detector started going crazy’. Roger, who is always out on camp, moved quickly to the site. His long search seemed to be over and his anticipation and excitement was contagious. The entire camp- campers, counselors and specialists, gathered at the site while staff members dug the capsule out. Shelly, who was at camp when the capsule was first buried, was also there to witness the momentous event. Were it not for our newest program Eco Adventure, lead by Specialist, Jenna Crithary, the location of the time capsule from 1979 would more than likely still be a mystery.

The anticipation was long in coming. The excitement was palpable. The Daily Record was on site to record the event.

Game-Set-Match!!

The Tennis Specialists served up an ace today at our opening round of Stonybrook’s Tennis Clinic. The group will continue to train over the next two days. The campers will learn new tennis terms each day, as well as improve their ground strokes and volleys. Ask a tennis clinic participant how many times they were able to hit the ball before it dropped and if they were able to escape in the giant game of Jailbreak!

Over the next few weeks, the campers will be able to participate in other clinics. These include basketball, golf and baseball. These clinics serve as a great tool for those athletes who want to learn and excel at several disciplines. Stonybrook continues to strive to develop the most well rounded camper.

THE STONYBROOK VAN CHALLENGE!

At Stonybrook we always say, “Camp starts when you get on the bus”. We have formalized this concept with a fun competition called The Stonybrook Van Challenge. Why? Because while safety is always our number one priority, we see time on the bus as yet another opportunity to engage campers in a good time. At the beginning of camp all families received a Van Challenge Schedule that listed the theme competition for each day and the number of points that could be earned each day.

We have already had many fun challenges including: Toy Story 3, World Cup and Decorate your Van. Creativity was especially high on Crazy Hat Day. As each camper exited their van at camp, we were amazed at the variety and inventiveness of their hats. Both campers and counselors sported hats they had at home or had made themselves.

Right now, Van 5 is in the lead with Van 6 a close second. But the challenge is just underway. Every day the vans are coming in and our campers are WOWING us with their creativity, lead by our wonderful van counselors' ingenuity and incredible spirit!! At this point, no one can tell who will win the Stonybrook Van Challenge. We look forward to each morning when our campers come off their vans, to see how the van counselors have inspired them to bring the theme of the day to life! It could be costumes, a skit, a song…. Our creative counselors are always looking to help our campers get the most from each of our themes. We want our campers to enjoy each day's ride to and from camp and the Stonybrook Van Challenge accomplishes this goal.

Please note: Camp theme days (as listed on our camp calendar) are quite often different than the van challenge themes.

Water Day!

It's another fantastic day here at Stonybrook Day Camp! Today our campers enjoyed Water Day as they had fun on a variety of water rides. We had two water slides, a counselor dunk tank, a shoot and splash, and a slip and slide!

On one water slide the campers had a blast racing each other through an obstacle course in order to reach the top of the slide. At the counselor dunk tank, the kids had to putt the golf ball into the hole to get their counselor wet. The campers laughed and enjoyed themselves as they tried to get their counselors soaked! They had really good aim!!!

At the shoot and splash, the kids got showered with water if they scored a basket in the hoop. The campers competed to see who could score the most points, and who could get wetter! Over on the slip and slide, the kids had a ton of fun. They slid through the slip and slide really fast to get as wet as they could!

Every camper agreed, it's been another awesome day here at Stonybrook Day Camp. The campers and counselors thoroughly enjoyed Water Day!! Everyone had a blast participating in all the activities!

Bowling - Bowling - Bowling

Rainy Day? Not at Stonybrook Day Camp!! Today, the theme was Bowling, Bowling, Bowling. Our campers had a “ball”!! As always, we reacted to our environment and we adjusted programming. We sent our campers off to the bowling alley. They had so much fun! We had lots of strikes and spares! The gutter balls few and far between. We were so busy all day we barely remembered to stop for lunch! We enjoyed a rainy day Pasta Q in the Pavillion and then kept the fun going all day long.

Monday was the start of our fishing derby. It is a week long contest recording the amount of fish caught by each group. The group with the highest score wins an ice cream party!

As of today, the Iron Men are in the lead with 6 fish. There is a three way tie for second place between the Lucky Charms, the Super Silly Starfish, and the Super Smash Bros. All three groups are fighting their way to the top with 3 fish each.

The Crazy Daisies and the Mad Dogs are tied for third place with both having 1 fish.

It's still early and it could be anyone's fish!

Everyone's having a rocking good time at performing arts so far! With lots of drama games and dancing, all of the campers are really expressing themselves. During hobbies and electives, each camper gets to use his or her imagination during our skits and monolgues. Each day, every child leaves performing arts with a smile on their face and a new found confidence.

As the Fourth of July celebrations slowed down, Teen Xtreme really got going on our first big overnight trip to Club Getaway. As soon as we got off the bus, we were greeted by the awesome Club Getaway staff. All of the Teen Xtreme campers were excited for 3 great days of activities and fun. The waterfront was a huge hit which included water inflatables, boat rides, and rafts. At night, Stonybrook competed against other camps in the wild and crazy challenge, which was followed by a dance party.

The next day brought even more adventure and fun. We took a trip to Kent Falls where the campers “swam” in the waterfalls. After getting back to Club Getaway, we continued our activities and one of the favorites were the bungie trampolines. At nighttime, the campers competed in Getaway Idol and danced the night away again. This night ended on a perfect note with smores by the campfire.

Teen Xtreme had an incredible experience on our first trip and cannot wait to see what is in store for us in New York City next week!

WATER DAY COMES EARLY TO STONYBROOK DAY CAMP!!!

Yes, it is true. If you look at the Stonybrook calendar, it says Wild Water Day is on July 15th. We are still looking forward to that highlight of summer. But today, we had a surprise for everyone on camp. Here at camp, we pride ourselves on our flexibility and the importance we place on our reaction to the needs and wants of our campers. So in response to the high temperatures we adjusted programming and brought in extra water rides.

Today, we brought in a special treat for our campers. We surprised everyone with water rides. They had the opportunity to slide down a wild rapids water slide and enjoy a wet obstacle course. Of course, we continued to apply sunscreen judiciously and made sure everyone drank plenty of water. Both campers and counselors had a blast enjoying all that Stonybrook has to offer.

Our decision to call this ‘Water Week’ has proven successful on many fronts. Everyone on camp has been kept cool, comfortable and entertained. On Tuesday, the campers had extra sunscreen applications. The groups stopped for frequent drinking water breaks. They all had an extra swim period. In addition, we strategically placed water sprinklers around camp so our campers could enjoy them as they moved from one activity to another. We don’t miss a beat when it comes to thinking of ways to keep the campers happy!

A blog from Super Science!

Hello from Super Science. We are off to a very hot beginning of the week. Here is a fun fact for you...persperation is your body's mechanism for fighting off heat. The perspiration actually pulls the heat away from your body causing the perspiration to evaporate and your body to cool down.

This week, at the request of the children, the younger groups are making goo (I tell the kids to ask their parents before bringing it into the house). The older groups are being introduced to the properties of aerodynamics as we build straw rockets and cars.

This summer will bring the introduction of new and exciting investigations such as the isolation of DNA from strawberries. We will also bring back some favorites such as making ice cream the scientific way.

Water Week 2010

WELCOME TO WATER WEEK 2010!

Summer is all about fun in the sun, but with the sun comes heat. So while heat and camp go hand in hand it doesn’t mean the fun has to stop. That is a very good thing because no matter what tv channel you turn to, all weather reports are saying the same thing for this week -- RECORD HEAT! We want to reassure you that we will be able to have fun and be safe in this record heat. As you know, the health and happiness of your children is our priority.

Strategies for camp fun in the heat this week:

1. The theme for the week is "Water, Water Everywhere." We plan on keeping the kids wet and hydrated all day. Two in the belly, one on the head! Every corner of the camp will be spraying water and will have plenty of hydrating stations.

2. Each group will have 3 swim periods per day. Please pack 1-2 extra swimsuits and 1 extra towel for your camper.

3. We will have 4 mandatory suntan lotion application periods throughout the day.

4. Camp will include a lot of wet fun. For the little ones, think games like Splish, Splish, Splash with cups of water and other fun water activities. And for the older ones, Water Polo and Splash Downs

5. Shade, shade, shade. We always keep our kids in the shade as much as possible. We are very lucky to have lots of shaded areas at Stonybrook Day Camp. As far as outside venues, our picnic grove (Super Science, Arts and Crafts), flagpole, challenge course, Apple Grove, and the Hobby Tree all provide some relief from the sun. On a hot day, we bring the fun indoors whenever we can… We will use the pavilion, the arts and craft studio, and the cooking studio.

6. All campers will end the day with an extra cold pop or ice cream, a cold drink, and a bathroom stop.

7. Adjusting plans may also be necessary on a super hot day. As far as sports goes, rather than running around, we may work on skills… we still will do the activity (unless it is when we have an extra free swim) but we are going to be mindful about exhaustion in the heat.

So as you see your weather report, just know we plan to adjust for really hot days. Camp is still fun despite the high temps and if you ever have any questions about this, please call anytime.

To help us, we ask all parents to please make sure campers have a good breakfast and remind them the importance of hydration. Please feel free to send water bottles on the bus, and again, pack 1-2 extra bathing suits and an extra towel for the week.

Like any other camp day, if your children will not be coming to camp for any reason, please let the office know. Feel free to contact me if you have any additional concerns or questions.

Stay cool!
Roger, Shelly, Matt, Jen, Alysia, Alyse and Katie

July 4th

Wishing you a Happy 4th of July! Whether you are planning to enjoy fireworks, bbq or just relax, we hope you have a great time with family and friends. Summer 2010 at Stonybrook is off to a great start- we had a great first week of camp and we thank you for being a part of it! We are looking forward to week 2 and even though it is the weekend, we are still thinking about our campers; we wanted to share these July 4th facts with them….

Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national animal but was outvoted when John Adams and Thomas Jefferson chose the bald eagle.

Over an estimated 150 million hot dogs will be consumed on July 4th. That's roughly 1 dog for every two people in the U.S.

Oddly, the majority of the nation's flags and patriotic paraphernalia in relation to the 4th of July are produced in China. Nearly $349 million dollars are used each year to import in the flags, banners, decorations, and emblems.

The first 4th of July party held at the White House was in 1801.

The 4th of July was not declared a national holiday until 1941.

John Hancock was the only person to actually sign the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The other 55 signers did not sign it until August 2nd or even later.

When the United States became a country, there were approximately 2.5 million people living in the country. Today the population is around 304 million.

Bristol, Rhode Island has the oldest, continuous 4th of July celebration dating back to 1785.

And we wanted to leave you with one 4th of July joke
Q: What did one flag say to the other flag?

A: Nothing, it just waved.

Source: www.examiner.com

Have a great holiday and we look forward to seeing you Tuesday!

A Sports Blog!

Rich, Jim, Bill, and Rob are excited about summer 2010 at Stonybrook. The new basketball court is amazing and all ages are enjoying the easily adjustable baskets. Campers are already showing improvement with their dribbling and shooting. The soccer field is in great shape and the kids love to pick their favorite World Cup country to represent in our games. The Yankees and Mets still fuel the debate on the baseball field. The campers are enthusiastic pretending to be their favorite player as they hit the ball over the fence. The ATV's are running smoothly and we see future X-games competitors in our midst. The campers are also enjoying popping balloons on the archery range and going for hole-in-one's on the golf course. Ask your kids what they have learned; it should be something new each day.
