Eco Adventures at Stonybrook!

Our Eco Adventures and Super Science Specialist:  Jenna Crithary

For the first three weeks at Stonybrook, the campers of EcoAdventures have made many discoveries down at the pond.  The babbling brook between the challenge course and pool runs down hill and forms a small pool before reaching the pond.  This small pool holds a bevy of aquatic creatures that the campers can detect, catch, observe and release.

Crayfish top the list for the most abundant creature, with minnows, salamanders, water bugs and the occasional frog following close behind.  Our largest crayfish was caught by Trailblazer Sam and it measured 2.5 inches with a 1-inch claw!  The campers learn quickly that in order to successfully catch a crayfish they need to place their net behind the crayfish since this type of crustacean swims backwards when attempting to flee.  We have also found a few froglets - frogs that are in between tadpoles and frogs and have all of their legs and still a portion of their tail.

The small pool is a terrific spot at camp since we can wave to our friends on the zip line at the challenge course and in the boats on the pond.  Plus the cool water from the brook is a welcome relief on a hot day!
