New for 2010 !!!
Stonybrook is excited to announce a new program offering for Summer 2010- ECO ADVENTURE!
Eco Adventure is all about fun environmental activities. The program will take campers on an exploration of Stonybrook’s ecosystem…. What is an ecosystem? An ecosystem, short for ecological system, includes all living organisms existing together is a particular area. The plants and animals within an area interact with each other and with the non-living elements of the area, such as climate, water, soil and so on. An ecosystem can be small like a puddle or vast like an ocean. While Stonybrook’s property does not include the Atlantic, it is home to many ecosystems, which will offer campers a chance to explore and learn while having fun.
Examples of activities for Junior camp will include:
· Raising Moarchs from caterpillars
· Growing organic strawberries and vegetables
· Exploring hydroponics
· Maintaining a compost pile
· Going Geocaching- a treasure hunt in the wilderness using a GPS unit
Examples of activities for Upper Camp include:
· Composting and gardening without any chemicals
· Going Geochahing and creating your own caches with a GPS
· Exploring our aquatic ecosystem
· Learning about Solar Energy and Recycling
All activities have a hands-on approach and Jenna Crithary, a new Stonybrook staffer, will run the program. Jenna is currently a senior at Centenary College and will be graduating in May 2011 with a degree in Biology and a minor in Environmental Science and Education. She is a mother of three, a freelance graphic artist and also a Brownie Troop leader. She is excited to further develop her environmental career at Stonybrook as she puts into practice everything she has learned at school.
We are thrilled to have Jenna join our staff, and she is looking forward to a summer of adventures in Stonybrook’s ecosystem with a focus on renewable resources and recycling. We are certain that Jenna will help our campers become more aware and excited about the environment! And this can only lead to good things (I type this as I look outside at Stonybrook’s beautiful property)!
