SWIM

With camp well and truly in full swing, there’s nowhere busier than the pools!

Under the leadership of Mike Rubinstein, our Aquatics director who brings over 20 years of aquatic leadership, all campers were swim tested on the first day of camp and are receiving swim lessons from our team of wonderful swim instructors in our two heated pools.

At Stonybrook Day Camp, we comprehensively test each camper to establish an initial swim lesson group. Each camper has been assigned to a quality instructor and has begun working to improve skills within their respective level.  We use a modified Red Cross Curriculum.

We continue to evaluate each camper on a daily basis and will be making changes to their swim level group to challenge our campers to become the best swimmer that they can be by the end of the summer.

Of course, in the afternoon, our campers have General Swim, a time where they can swim with friends and play pool games under the guidance and watch of our Lifeguard Team.  Water Polo, Volley Ball and Belly Flop contests are favorites with our campers!

We look forward to keeping you updated with all the fun and growth at the pool this summer!

Stonybrook's 1st Day of Camp!

We know campers and parents were both thrilled- June 27th finally arrived, and day one of Stonybrook Day Camp 2011 began! We couldn't have asked for a better day; it was beautiful weather and our staff were excited to get camp started.

Campers arrived with smiles, and the good times truly continued throughout the day.

Team building was the theme for the day and our campers really got to know one another.  Of course, many returning campers saw friends they knew as evidenced by the big hugs, but we were sure to include and introduce all.

And our new campers didn't miss a beat.

We anticipate the rest of our camp season will continue to wow our campers as today did.....Thanks for a great first day!

Hobbies and Electives

As the countdown continues and camp is rapidly approaching, we wanted to offer you some information about our Hobbies and Electives Program.

Camp days are action packed with all types of activities - swimming, sports, special events etc. Our campers have full schedules and go from activity to activity with their group. Our hobbies and electives program is an opportunity for each camper to choose a week long activity that they have an interest in or enthusiasm about. Hobbies are activities that are offered to our younger campers, kindergarten and first graders, and Electives are offered to all of Upper Camp.

Since the Hobbies and Electives schedule begins on Monday of each week, we will be asking your children to sign up for their hobby or elective on the first day of camp. Each specialist will be introducing and explaining each activity in further detail on the first day of camp but we wanted to give you an opportunity to discuss with your child, prior to camp, what their options will be for the first week.

HOBBIES:  (Week 1): Challenge Course, Cooking, Ceramics (Arts and Crafts), Soccer, Tennis and Martial Arts

ELECTIVES: (Week 1): Challenge Course, Boating and Fishing, Ceramics (Arts and Crafts), Basketball, Salsa Dance, Rocketry, ATVs, Swim Club and Eco Adventure

Talk about it with your kids in these last few days of school….camp is in the air!!!

Staff Training 2011

Staff training 2011 was held this weekend, and staff learned all about camp policies, camp goals and Stonybrook Day Camp’s overall camp philosophy.  Safety and keeping camp fun were big themes as was encouraging campers to connect and develop friendships.

Day one welcomed new staff only and topics covered included camp activities, staff expectations, camper needs and special events, among other topics.  All staff, new and returning, attended day two of training and staff learned about camper safety, team building, downtime activities and the power of camp in creating change in campers’ lives. The leadership team, the aquatics director and the camp nurse all lead sessions and shared their expertise.  Morris Gold, from the camp insurance company, Sobel & Co., came to speak about safety and the important role that staff have in ensuring safety through smart decision making.

Staff met their co-counselors and began planning for the beginning of camp.  Training included some songs, some games and lots of excitement for camp to start.

Friendships and Values

One of the biggest rewards from the summer here at Stonybrook will be the many wonderful friendships that will form.

The other reward over the summer will be the values that our camp works hard to instill in your kids.

Caring
Respect
Honesty
Friendship

This totem pole was built in 2006 and even though the woodpeckers made a mess of it, it still represents all of those wonderful values and friendships!

This is just another reason why we are looking forward to the 2011 summer camp season!

The Road to Stonybrook

We hope you all enjoyed the holiday weekend. It was the kickstart to summer, which also means that Camp is right around the corner! Our Stonybrook staff is working hard to get camp ready for opening day.

No detail is left untouched--from paperwork in the office, to art supplies, to sports gear for our fields--things are getting organized and cleaned and ready for the fabulous mess of good time that will be all summer long.

We are eagerly anticipating seeing the arrival of camp buses and greeting our campers with a big, warm welcome to Stonybrook Summer 2011!
