Dear Stonybrook Families & Friends:
All of us here at Stonybrook Day Camp send our love and best wishes to you and your families this Turkey Day. We are so appreciative to have you as part of our camp community to share in the spirit of summer, and continue to build the Stonybrook Day camp legacy. Your children give us such a gift year after year with their infinite smiles, laughter and pure joy while spending their summers with us.

It is amazing that almost three months have past since our final days of summer 2009. Although the kids are not running through the fields; swimming in the pools; or singing their bunk ballads on stage, there is plenty of buzz at SBDC in preparation for Summer 2010. We have some awesome programs and some exciting new camp features under development.

o One of our exciting programs is our even more flexible Junior Camp program. We have listened to our current and new, young, camper parents and tailored the program to position SBDC junior camp as the premiere, real, young camp experience. We feel confident that you will agree, there is no other camp program for 3 and 4 year olds that bring children into a real camp community that they will thrive in for the next 5-10 years. (Junior Camp Highlights below)

o If you never have gone hydrotubing, you have no idea what you are missing. This summer your kids will have the time of their lives on our newest day trip for upper campers (2nd graders +). We tested this program in 2009, and it was a huge hit. In 2010, we are bringing it back, and will have more time booked for Stonybrook campers.

Holiday Fun
The SBDC staff feels we have gotten to know your kids eating habits as well as anyone, and we want to share some Thanksgiving menu options designed with SBDC campers in mind.

1. Fact: Turkey contains L-tryptophan, an essential amino acid with a documented sleep inducing effect. It works best on an empty stomach. Given t-giving is in general an indoor holiday and there are no great outlets to get all that young energy released at home, we recommend a Fred Flintstone size portion of turkey to every child at your feast.

2. Fact: 7/10 kids do not like pumpkin or pecan pie, but 10 of 10 kids like ice-cream (trust us we know). This year, make it simple and yummy with some festive ice-cream sundae making with fun seasonal flavors like apple pie or pumpkin… add whipped cream, chocolate syrup and sprinkles, and WALA- happy child. (Best served right before your guests are about to leave… counteracts the Turkey)

3. Fact: Thanksgiving is the perfect time to sneak some vegetables into some lip smacking foods. We are far too busy to doctor sweet potatoes or string beans on a daily basis, but now that you may have a few people pitching in or time set aside… go for the fun. Nothing beats marshmallows baked on top of sweet potato casserole, and string beans taste a whole lot better with a fair amount of butter and almonds stirred in. Check out these sites for some great, easy, kid-willing-to-eat recipes.
